WINTER 2017

The Nazaré Long Sleeve was designed in and inspired by the coast of Portugal. In Nazaré, a beach housing the biggest waves in the world, stands a statue of a deer holding a surf board. A sketch of this statue is featured in our design, printed in navy blue ink, on the front of a heather brown long sleeve.

The Legend of Nazaré

Once, on a foggy day, there was a hunter roaming the beach when he saw a huge deer. He eagerly started chasing the deer on horseback, not realizing he was nearing a large cliff. The deer was out of sight when the man realized he was about to plummet off the cliff, but his horse was going too fast to slow down. He immediately began praying in the name of the Holy Lady of Nazaré, as he remembered her sacred chapel was near. The man's horse miraculously stopped at the edge of the cliff, and the man began rejoicing. He sent gifts to various chapels to thank the Holy Lady, and he praised her until the day he died.

This legend is told by the locals of Nazaré as a reminder of the miracle that happened that day. Half-man and half-deer, the statue is symbolic of the legend and the surfer Garrett McNamara, who surfed one of the biggest waves in the world in Nazaré.
